Welcome to Spring everyone! It is a great time for many things like a detox, spring cleaning, planting new items in your garden and of course - dying eggs!
Camille and Dan dyed eggs last night in a new way (well, new for us anyway...)! Check out the pictures below as the wrap eggs in cool colored silk ties and then again in white fabric tying tightly. The eggs then sat for about 20 minutes in simmering water with a touch of white vinegar added. After cooling they were unwrapped and there you have beautiful eggs! We did them on white eggs this time but will add some more using brown eggs for a different effect. I also added some pictures of Camille's incubator where she has a few eggs that she is trying to hatch - she turns them twice a day and candle's them every day to check for signs of life. Lets hope for little cheepers!! The picture shows only half the eggs - she now has about 25 going. One more thing - please bear with me as I make some minor changes to this site. After Easter is over I will be adding new items and will also be making some changes to the Apothecary Shop to make it easier to shop! Happy Spring/Easter/Ostara to all! I just wanted to let everyone know about an open house I am having on Sunday March 24. If you are local, then please come by!!! I would love to meet you and have you see, in person, what it is that I am doing! There will be products for sale (new debut items!!!) and herbal refreshments to try and samples as well as learning about who I am what I love to do! Along with me will be the artistic director of the dance school, Mary Jane Rainone and also Tina Goulet~Reiki Practitioner to show you what they have to offer as well! Spring Open House! Sunday March 24, 2013 1:00 – 5:00 PM ET 840 Putnam Pike Chepachet, RI 02814 Right inside Glocester Dance Academy! Please contact me if you have any questions! I can be reached by email summitvalleyherbals@gmail.com and even on Facebook! www.facebook.com/summitvalleyherbals I really hope to see you there and it is great for all ages to please bring your family and friends and check out, in person, my 100% natural products and educational informat Lemon Verbena Poppy Seed "Camille's Castile". Guess who got a new camera???? Go ahead...guess! Yup - I did! I am quite excited because my other one, though it served me well for quite a few years, now has to be retired as it refuses to be consistent and does not always turn on. The new one is really nice and has lots of easy features that will help the extreme novice, like myself, take great pictures! (Thanks Dan! XOXO) I am showing the first picture I took above. It is of a new soap that I am debuting at my Summit Valley Herbals Spring Open House. This open house is taking place on 3/24/13 at 840 Putnam Pike at the Glocester Dance Academy studio. I will be having lots of new items and samples and treats so please come by!!! Feel free to visit my Facebook page for details and "like" the page for future updates on new items and contest giveaways! http://www.facebook.com/summitvalleyherbals Also, spring is right around the corner so start your seeds and plan your garden! Now is a great time to start thinking about your spring cleaning with natural cleaners for your home. Take the peels from your organic orange, put them in a jar and cover with white vinegar. Leave in sunny spot for at least two weeks and strain into a spray bottle and use as your all-purpose cleaner. Stay tuned as the weather gets better - more projects from Dan and pictures on their way! Oh, don't forget to turn your clocks ahead on Saturday evening! Yes, it is the dreaded "I just lost an hour of my sleep" time! Well, not really 99 and not really beer...but anyway... Dan went to a whiskey tasting on Sunday and being who he is, and knowing me the way he does, he ended up scoring 7 empty bottles from one of the vendors, Hudson Whiskey, at the end of the night. SCORE!!! These bottles are too cool for words. They are clear glass with corked toppers and I cannot wait to get stuff in 'em! The possibilities are endless - dried herbs, tinctures, herb salt or sugar, homemade vanilla, maybe some oils....etc, etc... I just had to share this because the picture was posted on my Instagram account and people were askin'! Oh, by the way - do you follow me on Instagram? If not, you should. Thanks to Dan for his wheelin' and dealin' (oh, and removing the labels) and I am looking forward to taking more pictures of these babies filled with some sort of love... Just a quick post here...I am trying to improve my photography skills so bear with me while I work on that! I love pictures and want to take really great ones. While I try to figure out the best way to use the resources on my camera I am trying my hand at Instagram with my phone.
Have fun with me and look for the new "View on Instagram" button over to the right and view my pictures as I take them at home on the farm, out and about in the real world or some of my products! Feel free to "follow me there" - I may take some out of the ordinary ones! Enjoy your weekend!!! Today is Valentine’s Day! Hope you all are having a great day! For the last 22 years, I have had Dan as my Valentine and of course added Camille to my short list of Valentines 13 years ago! This morning we shared gifts at breakfast. I am extremely lucky to have a family who actually thinks about the gifts they give and that really makes my heart sing!
I received a cast iron Dutch oven favorable for cooking soups, stews and beans! I also received a plant – a Camellia sinensis which, for all intents and purposes is tea! Depending on how the leaves are processed, you can enjoy green, white or black tea from this species. And from Camille I received Cumin (which makes me smile big because I LOVE Cumin!) Now that’s love! Camille got a bag of items including glitter tattoos and a bracelet and of course you have to have 1 candy so she got Valentine Peeps! I also made up a coupon book for her because she loves that sort of thing – one for a sleep over with friends, another to pick the dinner that day and a spa night with Mama, etc...! I find it hard to buy for Dan, he seems to always have everything and then some - plus I really do not want to get him started on yet another hobby or project!!!! So for him he gets chocolate covered pomegranate seeds and an oil scent I blended just for him (oh, and for me of course!) I started with a base of Sunflower oil and added essential oils that have a masculine feel. I used a bunch of Sandalwood and added some Sweet Orange, Vanilla and Ylang Ylang. YUM! Smells great on him! I will also be spending time today with a few of my other loves: tea, yoga, crystals and meditation. These things bring a lot to the natural healing that I thoroughly love! Healing yourself and helping to get yourself back into a positive place is what I am working on learning and hope to be able to add to my services to help others (but I guess that is a whole separate blog spot for another day!) Either way, I myself will enjoy them on this day... Feel free to share what you love to do in the comments below!!!! I would love to hear them! Happy Valentine’s Day! We all know we are smack dab in the middle of one of the worst cold and flu seasons. There are warnings out there by everyone "strongly suggesting" you get your flu shot. Some work places even require it. Mine doesn't, thankfully, but they do "strongly advise" that we do get one and also offer them at the office. They have recently provided everyone with free hand sanitizer. Thanks, but no thanks to both the shot and the sanitizer.
This post s not going to go into what I think about hand sanitizer or the flu shot, but you won't find me using either one of them. I have other ideas that have worked wonders for our family. Not to say we may never get sick or even get the flu (I cannot recall any of us ever getting the flu in the past), but we are fighting the beast with nature and so far, so good. While I am trying to avoid breathing in all the chemical sprays like Lysol, and the strong alcohol-ness of sanitizers, I am keeping my hands washed with....you're not going to believe this....regular soap and water! Go figure... I also have the following, along with teas and good foods, in my arsenal of weapons: 1. Echinacea tincture - icky tasting immune support 2. Elderberry tincture - sweet immune support 3. Elderberry syrup - a very yummy, sweet immune support 4. Master tonic - the master of immune supports that will knock your breath away 5. Honey - soothing sore throats and cough and super sticky sweet immune support 6. Tissues - please-please please keep your nose clear and BLOW! OK, do you get the picture? Support your immune system to being the strongest it can be so it has the ability to fight off the nasties on it's own. Eat whole, good, non-processed, non-fast foods and use some of the above immune supporters and you could make it through just fine on your own. Just my opinion (oh, and experience)... Be well and wash those hands! Check out my Facebook page for recipes for Master tonic and Elderberry syrup and other posts containing great information! Don't forget to "Like" the page to keep up with cool stuff and giveaways, there is one going on right now! facebook.com/summitvalleyherbals When you stop and think of some things, it just makes them even better. Usually grabbing eggs in the morning is pretty mindless, wouldn't you think? Well, this morning I actually stopped and took a moment after I touched the eggs...they were so warm! It is a little chilly this morning so the eggs were extra warm. I pulled 4 eggs out of the nesting box (and of course I also pulled one out of the hay house but that one was far from warm and toasty!). As I did, one of the ladies was still in the box. I thanked her kindly as I took their donations (and dodged a peck and a hiss of course) and felt the warm eggs in my hand and remembered these little gems come from those little living things....what extra special eggs we have; so fresh that they warm your heart.
Thanks girls! Happy New Year everyone! Hope you are all safe and sound. I just wanted to let you know that there will be a lot of changes to the website design over the next month or two so please bear with me as I make this site a great place that you can visit every day! There may be times when ordering is not possible so if you have an order, just email me and I will take care of you ASAP.
With that aside, I just wanted to quickly talk about connecting with nature even during the ever-changing winter weather. For those of you who live in areas that do not get the season changes, then close your eyes! :) For the rest of us, we may live an areas that go through those seasonal changes and cannot always get outside to get our dose of Mother Nature. Because I feel it is important to enjoy nature all the time, I have come up with some ways for you to enjoy those Earthly elements any time of year. Water: enjoy a long bath, soak your feet in a water bath, think about that large class of cold water that you are drinking every morning, close your eyes during your morning/evening shower for a moment and pretend you are standing in a waterfall! Fire: light a fire in your fireplace and spend time near it, light a candle, have a bonfire outside if you can, enjoy watching the flames as you cook on your gas stove! Earth: keep plants in your home and tend to them, keep a pot of soil from outside in your garage or porch and get your hands in it! Air: while you are walking to and from places take nice deep breaths, light incense in your home, take a 5 minute break during the day and just notice your breath, watch the breath come out as you do walk outside in cold weather - it's wonderful to see! It does not take much to bring nature to yourself every day even in a blizzard! So please take a moment and enjoy nature every single day! |
