Hey y'all! Welcome to summer! I hope you are starting to see growth in your own gardens - ours is really cranking and still lots more to come. We have been picking a variety of lettuces, celery, chard and kale for dinners and herbs such as rosemary, thyme, sage and basil are being dried for future use. Wild crafted plantain, mugwort, and selfheal has been recently collected for medicine along with chamomile and yarrow from the garden. Gypsy moths seem to have taken over again this year - how are your trees holding up?
Bamboo harvest was a task taken on this spring by Dan who then proceeded to use that harvest in various ways - we now have a really cool looking wind chime and a ring and it was also added to our goat area to hold up the hops and also to the gazebo - doesn't it looks great?! Dan has also found the time to re-purpose an old filing cabinet which has now been turned into an evaporator. You may recall our maple sap harvest earlier this year and since it took way too long to evaporate it to syrup, Dan used his creativity and resourcefulness and made something that will work much better. Also planning on making our own sea salt so the next time we take a trip to the water, we will take some home and boil it down - I will keep you updated on that! Apples, plums and pears are starting to grow. Rhubarb is ready of course but I am not sure what to do with that - any suggestions? We also have a new addition to our animal clan, this little female rat that you see in the pictures below came with another little one but because the other one turned out to be a male so off he goes back to the teacher and to someone else who has other males. We do not need a gazillion baby rats! She is cute and is essentially nameless because Camille cannot commit; Dan and I have been calling her Dixie. Please take a visit to my other pages SV Herbals, SV Aromatherapy, SV Yoga and SV Crystals to see what is for sale and the information that is there and contact me if you have any questions or suggestions! Each page will have its own specific information but put them all together and they form a great resource for learning how to naturally heal yourself. Enjoy the pictures and we will catch up soon! Happy Spring, Y'all!
It is been such a busy time! Everything is coming up and kids are growing fast. Our six baby goats were born 5 weeks ago and they are growing, literally, by leaps and bounds! Each mom had twins and they are all getting ready to move to their new homes soon. Once they are off the milk and learn to eat hay and drink from a water bucket they are on their way! One to two more weeks should do it! The garden is gearing up and looking a lot less barren these days and the fruit trees are bloomin'! Before you know it herbs will be hung up to be dried so that powerful medicine can be made. I am looking forward to replenishing my tincture drawer. The broad and narrow leaf plantain that grown in your yard makes a great poultice when you get bit - just pick a piece (from your non-chemically treated lawn), chew it up and slap it on, you can take your spring nettles and cook them up or dry them for a daily infusion, Camille will eventually be needing goldenrod for her mild allergy symptoms and the catnip always comes in handy with upset or nervous tummies. Dandelions are in full swing right now - please do not spray your yards! Why would you want to kill a colorful, useful flower. This plant can be used from head to root for numerous things. Dandelion flower petals make a lovely jelly, the popped off heads dipped in batter make a delicious fritter and the roots make powerful medicine for liver and gall bladder health and also makes a great coffee substitute! The leaves contain a significant amount of vitamin A and make a good addition to a meal. And there is so much more... Check out my Yoga tab for updates on events at local places as well as my Crystals tab for workshops! The Herbs tab will keep you up to date as far as products made from out goat milk and our own grown herbs! I do hope to start doing some videos and posting them on my YouTube channel. There will be some on yoga, herbs and crystals! Enjoy your spring and I hope to connect with you soon! What a LONG winter it has been. Here in NW RI we have been under a blanket of snow that appears to not be going anywhere fast. It is early spring and this is the time of year when one starts to prepare for the growing season, kidding, etc...kind of tough this year. It snowed a whole bunch last night...
However, spring is still awesome, even under a cover of dirty white snow. We have pregnant does that are due very soon and I will make sure that once they are born, the pictures will be abundant! Stay tuned for that! This is also the first year that Dan has tapped the maple trees on our property. They were clearly marked in the fall while the leaves were still on them and now that early spring has arrived (yeah, right), 10 trees out of the marked 30 were tapped for sap about 3 weeks ago. As of today we have totaled 13 gallons of sap! This is very exciting! Today the sap is boiling down...I will let you know how much syrup we get from all this sap. The garden is still resting, hopefully the snow will melt soon and we can watch the new growth begin. I have been busy indoors as well, making oats balls (Dan currently working on a better name for them) for our breakfast or morning snack at work, freezing juiced and "bulleted" kale, spinach and whole lemons so I can make my smoothies a little quicker in the morning. I am working on a Nothing Wasted thing where I try to use up stuff to its full potential. The organic lemons I juiced are a good example. I cut off the very ends of the lemons and placed those in a mason jar and filled it with white vinegar to make my daily cleaning product. The juiced whole lemons will be used in my smoothies or just in a glass of warm water for my morning drink - that is a great way to start your day, the lemon water helps cleans your system and liver and get you ready to digest your food for the day. The pulp from the juiced lemons will go right into the compost pile where the chickens will pick at it and then get composted. #nothingwasted. I have been working on yoga classes for my fabulous students and doing workshops as well. Meander on over to the Summit Valley Yoga tab for more info on that and to watch for upcoming events! Enjoy the pictures and stay warm and dry. Happy Spring! Well, cold and flu season is obviously in full swing by now. I wouldn't know though, we have not been sick yet! I had the start of a cold a couple of weeks back but kicked that immediately. I hear stories of how bugs and flu and cold viruses are running through people's households taking with them everyone in their path. How does one naturally avoid this? Many ways...
Eat better - duh! More veggies will be a great start. Simple right? Eat at least one big salad a day and eat lots of veggies with dinner. Cut your sugar intake - if you are eating a small chocolate here and there that is OK but when you pump yourself and your kids with sugar-laden Gatorade drinks, cookies, candy, soda, etc... it will lower the immune system's capability to help keep you from getting sick. Do not prevent it from doing it's job - period. Drink water, tea and homemade bone broth. Lots of soups with lots of spices, beans, rice...mmmmmmm! Also - take daily doses of Elderberry syrup, Echinacea and Elderberry tinctures, and of course Fire cider/Master tonic is a must in every household. Check out my Facebook page notes section for recipes for these. Add extra vitamin C and exercise to the mix, wash your hands with regular soap and water and avoid those crazy anti-bacterial gels - there ya go! Healthy as a horse! :) Below are pictures from the straining of my last batch of fire cider which sat for 6 weeks and is ready to go. I keep two smaller bottles in my bathroom medicine drawer and the extra in my medicine closet with my herbs. Enjoy and stay healthy! I am finding it hard these days to stop and take the time to write blog entries! I miss it and hope to pick up the pace! Another year is winding down and Fall is well under way. The garden is dying down, we have picked the last of the apples and are now working on what to do with our mega crop of pears. Threat of the first snow is upon us as the nights get chilly and the blankets come up higher while snuggling in bed.
I am starting my Saturday morning yoga classes on November 1st and am really looking forward to teaching again after a little break from my summer outdoor yoga session. Check out Summit Valley Herbals on Facebook for more details on that! The Apothecary store is getting ready for holiday gift-giving time! Make sure you gift with love and thoughtfulness this and every year and support your local small businesses who provide the best products at great value. Click on the tab above and see what you can get for your loved ones and friends! If you are in the market for gift basket type things then email me and we can come up with something great and unique together. Make sure you start to take good care of yourself now so you do not get rundown during this busy end of the year hustle and bustle. Take Elderberry syrup daily and honey, ginger and lemon in the evening before bed - so soothing and healing. Take time to do yoga or meditate a little every day and learn to take the time to stop and do some active breathing - this will help you keep your head on straight! :) Enjoy some pics below! It is still Summer according to the turning of the year but it feels like Autumn today! There is a chill in the air and tons of things being harvested! Socks are starting to appear on my feet, longer yoga pants being chosen over capri style, pumpkin spice soap in the works...
Last night Dan pulled all the plums and we ended up making a Plum Lemon sorbet and freezing the slices from the ones we did not use so that for Thanksgiving we can make a plum sauce for the turkey! I am gathering the gorgeous Goldenrod from the back woods to replenish my Goldenrod tincture for those who suffer from allergy symptoms, mugwort, ragweed, mints and sage all being dried. Tomatoes winding down, getting ready for the big sauce making next month. Pears are getting ready to be harvested soon and made into....? Who know, I'll wing in when they are ready! The concord grapes are looking fruitful and getting stronger. We have also done pumpkins for the first time this year. We have 5 that look great, starting to turn orange now and hopefully they will be ready to carve and give up their seeds for our pleasure! And by the end of next month we will be harvesting roots from the Dandelions, Horseradish and Echinacea. Fall is a great time to reevaluate stuff that is going on in your life as well, those goals you set at the beginning of the year; time to check in with those and make changes if needed. It is also a great time to start new things as well. Check in soon with the Apothecary Shop as new things will be popping up! It will soon be time to decorate to house with Autumn and Halloween goodness! Happy Fall! Not much going on today. My brother in law felt that beer soap with hops would be a good thing so I did that today. No scent, just the moisturizing goodness of local RI beer made the hot process way (because I am impatient and want to use my soap before a 6 week wait period) with our own grown and dried hops added in for antibacterial and exfoliating properties.
Also took some pics around the yard, apple, pears and pumpkins growing in nicely. Enjoy the pics! |
